Independence four-star tight end Ty Lockwood announced Tuesday that he has flipped his commitment from Ohio State to Alabama football four days after receiving an offer from the Crimson Tide.

The 6-foot-5 Lockwood is ranked as the No. 9 tight end in the country, No. 141 player in the country and the No. 2 player in Tennessee, according to 247Sports Composite. He committed to Ohio State on August 19, 2021, becoming the Buckeyes' first 2023 commitment.

"I didn't want to make a decision right after but it was so hard to pass up. It's Alabama," Lockwood said. "You've got Nick Saban wanting you to come to his team and play for him. He see's great things in players and attributes and saw those in me so it was it pretty special to hear that from the greatest coach of all-time.

"The relationships I was able to build in the two days that I was there was pretty unbelievable. I clicked really well with their tight ends coach Joe Cox and I really liked watching them practice and compete. It's something I wanted to be a part of and something I couldn't pass up."

Ohio State recently had four-star tight end Jelani Thurman from Fairburn, Georgia, commit on July 22. Thurman is the No. 7 tight end and 106th best player in the country.

Lockwood said that Thurman's decision to commit to the Buckeyes had no impact on his final decision and that he's excited to work with the three tight ends who were a part of Alabama's 2022 class.

"I don't care about competition," Lockwood said. "Alabama took three tight ends last year so I'm not shy when it comes to competition. I think it makes me better especially when it comes to great competition and that's a big piece on why I picked Alabama.

"Ohio State has great tight ends but I want to be utilized a little bit more than how they use their tight ends and I think Alabama does that."

Before his commitment, the Crimson Tide had the nation's No. 2 class just behind Notre Dame but jumped to the No. 1 class while Ohio State fell to No. 4 behind Alabama, Notre Dame and Georgia. Lockwood is Alabama's only 2023 tight end commitment.

Last season he caught 42 passes for 462 yards with two touchdowns. In two seasons at Independence, he has 85 receptions for 1,068 yards with five touchdowns.
