Why USC football, not Michigan, is Georgia's top threat for the national championship
Michigan and TCU join Georgia as remaining undefeated teams, but we're unconvinced either of those schools is the top threat to the Bulldogs' throne.
Beware of Southern Cal.
On this edition of "SEC Football Unfiltered," a podcast from the USA TODAY Network, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams unpack why the Trojans profile as the biggest threat to challenge Georgia in the playoff, as long as USC wins the Pac-12 Championship to earn qualification.
The only team to beat Georgia these past two seasons came armed with a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback.
Bryce Young led Alabama past Georgia in the SEC Championship last season, with help from wide receivers Jameson Williams and John Metchie, before the Bulldogs won the rematch in the national championship.
Well, USC's Caleb Williams is favored to win the Heisman this year, and the Trojans' high-powered offense would be the biggest threat to Georgia's stout defense. Plus, Williams is armed with an elite receiving target, Jordan Addison.
Michigan, much like last season, plays a similar style to Georgia – solid on defense, churning run game and a quarterback who limits mistakes. But, we think Georgia does that style better. Conversely, USC offers something different – an elite aerial assault.
Meanwhile, TCU is battle tested, but it has needed several comeback victories to remain undefeated. Georgia's defense doesn't leave openings for comebacks.
