The New York Giants selecting Evan Neal had even greater significance for Alabama football and Nick Saban.

It marked the 14th consecutive year in which the Crimson Tide had a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. It ties Miami, which had the same streak that spanned 1995-2008.

The Giants picked Neal No. 7 overall on Thursday. He was also the 40th first-round draft pick during Saban's 15 seasons coaching Alabama.

Crimson Tide receiver Jameson Williams was also a first-round selection. The Detroit Lions traded up to select him No. 12 overall.

Alabama is set to break the record in 2023 considering quarterback Bryce Young and edge Will Anderson Jr. will likely declare after their junior seasons. That would bring the Crimson Tide to 15 consecutive drafts with a player selected in the first round.

Alabama is expected to have more players picked over the next two days. Linebacker Christian Harris, receiver John Metchie III, defensive linemen Phidarian Mathis and running back Brian Robinson Jr. are some players who could hear their names called on the second day of the draft, which starts at 7 p.m. Friday.

The final rounds, four through seven, will start at 11 a.m. Saturday.
