Trendon Watford: 3 things to know about the LSU basketball forward

LSU men's basketball freshman forward Trendon Watford is predicted to become a key figure on the Tigers' team.

Here is some basic info on Watford:

Now, here are three more facts about the LSU forward.

Watford committed to the Tigers in May 2019 as a 5-star recruit. He played basketball for Mountain Brook High School in Alabama, where he led the team to three back-to-back state championships. 

He was ranked 19th overall in the 2019 recruiting class and was the No.1 recruit from Alabama, according to ESPN. Watford was also the No. 6 top power forward recruit in his 2019 class. 

"He's got all the makings. He's a winner. One of the highest character people you'll ever meet," LSU head coach Will Wade told in 2019. "Unbelievable family, unbelievable background. Won three state championships. I think his learning curve is not going to be quite as much. He's got all the makings of a special, special player."

Watford averaged 23.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.5 blocks and 2.1 steals a game during his senior season.

He was named the 2018 Gatorade Player of the Year after finishing his career with 3,567 points and 1,909 rebounds.

Watford now holds Alabama High School Athletic Association's record for all-time leading rebounder. He also is ranked No. 6 in state history for his career points.

"He's a really, really special talent not just because of what he brings on the court," said coach Wade to "His high school program was well-run. His high school coach does a phenomenal job. His family did a phenomenal job."

Watford, who was on Mountain Brook's A-B honor roll, also played in the McDonald's All-American game, according to his LSU basketball profile. 

Trendon Watford was named to the Karl Malone Award watch list

In October 2019, Watford was one of 20 players named to the 2020 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award watch list. 

The award is named after Karl Malone, a former NBA player nicknamed "The Mailman" because he always delivered. 

“The young men on the watch list for this, and other awards in the Starting Five, should be extremely proud and motivated heading into the upcoming season,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. “Karl Malone was an exemplary player who brought his best every game and we expect to see similar effort from these student athletes."

Malone earned two gold medals, was a 14-time NBA All-Star and an 11-time All-NBA First Team player in his 19 seasons with the NBA, according to the Naismith Hall of Fame's press release on the 2020 watch list.

Trendon Watford is the little brother of Christian Watford of Raptors 905

Watford's older brother Christian played college basketball for Indiana University for three seasons before playing professionally. 

As a Hoosier, he played 132 games and scored 1,730 points, making him No. 10 on the school's all-time scoring list, according to his Indiana men's basketball profile. 

Before Trendon committed to LSU, he visited IU in 2017. He was there unofficially with his sister Elise Watford, whose Samford volleyball team was playing at Indiana, according to the IndyStar. 

While there, he took some pictures with his older brother as a tease to fans. '

Christian currently plays for Raptors 905, he averages 7.1 points per game, according to his NBA G-League profile.
