John Rhys Plumlee called Rich Rodriguez griping about Tucson's heat during super regionals
Rich Rodriguez was the Ole Miss football offensive coordinator in 2019, and he preceded that by being the Arizona Wildcats football head coach from 2012-17.
So when Ole Miss baseball and two-sport athlete John Rhys Plumlee faced the Arizona Wildcats in the NCAA Tuscon Super Regional on June 11-13, Plumlee called one of the coaches involved with recruiting him to Ole Miss for football and baseball that knew about life in Tucson.
Rodriguez revealed on his podcast "Hard Edge Football with Rich Rod" details of Plumlee's call to him during the Tucson trip.
"He FaceTimed me when they first got to Tucson," Rodriguez said of Plumlee. "I said, 'What's up John.' He said, 'Gosh coach, it's hot out here.' I'm like, 'It's hot in Mississippi, too.' He goes, 'No, it's like really hot, and I'm not sweating but I'm really hot.'"
According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in Tucson reached 103 degrees Fahrenheit on June 11, the high was 109 degrees on June 12, and the temperature hit 111 degrees on June 13.
Ole Miss and Arizona played all three games at night, but the temperature at first pitch was still 102 degrees on June 11, 104 degrees on June 12, and 108 degrees on June 13.
Arizona went 2-1 against Ole Miss in the Tucson Super Regional to advance to the College World Series.
"Jay Johnson, another good friend, the baseball coach at Arizona," Rodriguez said on the podcast, "has just done a phenomenal job there."
Plumlee started Game 2 of the series in right field, and he went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI during the 12-3 Ole Miss win. Plumlee also played in Game 3, and he scored a run as a pinch-runner.
Rodriguez is set to start his first season as an offensive coordinator for the Louisiana-Monroe football team. ULM football is scheduled to open its 2021 season at Kentucky on Sept. 4.
