The 2020-21 athletic calendar was filled with big wins and huge firsts for Ole Miss and Mississippi State. But for a huge chunk of sports fans in Mississippi, everything comes down to how the two schools fared head-to-head.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss both won national championships, the Bulldogs in baseball and the Rebels in women's golf. But in the Egg Bowl rivalry, it's hard to directly name one school champion over the other.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State played 16 times in head-to-head sports. They split those matchups 8-8. Mississippi State won two baseball games, two volleyball matches and logged one win each in men's basketball, women's basketball, women's soccer and softball. Ole Miss won three softball games and won one matchup in baseball, men's basketball, football, men's tennis and women's tennis.

If you're looking for a tiebreak, there are ways to give them to both schools.

For Mississippi State, it's pretty simple. There was actually a 17th head-to-head showdown. The two schools faced off in match play in the quarterfinals of the SEC women's golf tournament where Mississippi State took down the eventual national champions 3-2.

Count that and Mississippi State wins 9-8. But tug at that thread and you'll also find a way to give Ole Miss the advantage.

Let's keep using the SEC women's golf tournament as an example. Before match play began, all 14 SEC schools competed in stroke play. Ole Miss finished with a better score than Mississippi State in that stroke play tournament, which isn't counted as a head-to-head win but is technically a time when Ole Miss outperformed Mississippi State.

If you count events like that one, which were held in men's and women's golf, track and field and cross country, Ole Miss gains a sizable advantage.

The Rebels finished higher than the Bulldogs in all three women's cross country meets, five out of seven men's golf tournaments, all four men's track and field tournaments, three out of four women's track and field tournaments and six of eight women's golf tournaments.

Factor those numbers in and Ole Miss takes a 29-13 advantage.

Divide the numbers however you want. In sports with final scores, Ole Miss won by 29 points. In sports with sets, Ole Miss won by nine. Mississippi State had a 4-3 advantage in the big four TV sports of football, men's and women's basketball and baseball. In nine head-to-head sports, Mississippi State and Ole Miss both won the season series four times with one split.

It's even any way you slice it.
