Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin comments on USC firing Clay Helton: 'I can relate'
Helton was fired two games into his seventh season with the Trojans on Monday. Kiffin had a similar experience in 2013 when he was fired by USC five games into the season after starting 3-2. Kiffin, who hired Helton at USC as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, understands what Helton went through.
"Well, I feel for Clay," Kiffin said Wednesday. "Clay's a great person and I think everybody knows that. I can relate to being fired early in the year from there, but just in general for him to be fired after two games, that's a long season to sit around. I feel for him."
Kiffin's No. 16 Rebels (2-0) battle Tulane (1-1) in Oxford Saturday (7 p.m., ESPN2). Some, including ESPN's Rece Davis, have speculated Kiffin could be an attractive candidate to return to USC. Kiffin did not comment on whether he has any interest in the USC job.
Kiffin was an assistant coach at USC from 2001-06 and the head coach from 2010-13. He went to college and worked as a graduate assistant at Fresno State in central California and coached the NFL's Oakland Raiders in northern California for two years in 2007-08.
