Ole Miss QB Matt Corral reminds ESPN's Scott Van Pelt of Heisman winner Johnny Manziel
ESPN broadcasters Scott Van Pelt and "Stanford" Steve Coughlin do a weekly podcast called "SVPod."
This week on the show, they started talking about college football, and the conversation went toward Saturday's game between Alabama and Ole Miss.
Ole Miss, ranked No. 12 in the USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, plays No. 1-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
Scott Van Pelt compares Matt Corral to Johnny Manziel
"What Mississippi is with Matt Corral reminds me of what (Texas) A&M was with (Johnny) Manziel," Van Pelt said.
"Whoa, hot take," Coughlin responded.
Manziel won the 2012 Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M as a redshirt freshman. He also finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2013.
"Just listen, hear me," Van Pelt said. "They play fast. They pressure you — they pressure you across the board. It's not a one-dimensional approach. They're going to play fast, and they're going to score.
"What's different is that when Manziel was doing that, Nick Saban was still complaining about pace and the danger of the sport and is this what we want football to be. And now, not surprisingly, he figured out how to do that better than anybody else. So where Alabama was not built to compete with that really, because it was not who they were. Now, Alabama can do it just as well as you can, and it will be really interesting to see Saturday if Alabama, who is more than a two-touchdown favorite against a really capable offense like Mississippi, can they continue to just be what they've been lately? I don't know the answer.
"I don't say that Alabama is vulnerable, but I also don't think they seem inevitable, which is good for the sport."
Manziel and Texas A&M beat No. 1-ranked Alabama 29-24 in Tuscaloosa during the 2012 season.
Corral is 66-for-96 passing with nine touchdowns and 997 passing yards so far this year. He also has 33 carries for 158 yards and five rushing touchdowns.
