Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin describes admiration for Mike Leach to Paul Finebaum
One of the topics the pair discussed was Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach.
Finebaum played a recording of what Leach said Monday about Kiffin.
"I'd be lying if I told you I didn’t think that he thinks he's the best offensive coordinator, so it was modest of him to say," Leach said Monday. "They're doing a fine job this year, so we’ll just let the love keep coming both directions, how ‘bout that?"
Lane Kiffin says he 'admired' Mike Leach
After the audio clip, Finebaum asked Kiffin, "You guys do, seemingly from a distance, have a pretty unique relationship."
"Yeah, he's awesome," Kiffin said of Leach. "I've always liked him, admired what he does offensively. And I know in the SEC, that's foreign down here, because everyone is supposed to not like each other as coaches. You know, you're not a good coach if you like the other guy in your rivalry. But I'm kind of not typical in that fashion, as you know."
The Ole Miss and Mississippi State football teams are scheduled to meet in the Egg Bowl on Thursday, Nov. 25 in Starkville, Mississippi.
Finebaum then asked Kiffin to compare his offense to Leach's offense.
"A misconception or misperception about the offenses is that they're similar with pacing," Kiffin said. "Everybody always thinks that Mike goes fast and has always gone fast just because they're spread out. They don't go fast at all. They're actually one of the slower snap teams in the country — just like the one we just played in Jimbo (Fisher) and Texas A&M. They take the clock down almost every snap. So very different styles."
Ole Miss defeated Texas A&M 29-19 on Saturday.
