Top returning Jackson area high school football quarterbacks for 2021

Spring football is beginning at multiple schools across the Jackson area. Here is a look at some of the top returning quarterbacks for the 2021 season:

Cole Britton

South Side, Sr.

Cole Britton will try to lead the South Side to the top of the Region 6-4A standings after helping the Hawks reach the Class 4A playoffs. Britton threw for 876 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions as he completed 57.3% of his passes.

Jackson Cassidy

McKenzie, Jr.

With McKenzie dropping to Class 1A, there are high expectations for the Rebels and it starts with the offense. Jackson Cassidy threw for 1,192 yards and 10 touchdowns last season as he completed 48% of his passes as McKenzie reached the Class 2A quarterfinals. He also rushed for 516 yards and six touchdowns.

Sam Driggers

Peabody, Jr.

Sam Driggers helped the Golden Tide win their third straight Class 2A state championship in his first year as a starter. Peabody has won 37 straight games, which is the longest active streak in the state and tied for sixth in the country. He threw for 1,189 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions as he completed 55.7% of his passes.

Bryce Hernandez

Riverside, Sr.

Bryce Hernandez enters the spring as the go-to arm for the Panthers after splitting time with Weston Ward in 2020. The duo helped lead Riverside for the Class 2A quarterfinals. He threw for 545 yards with three touchdowns and five interceptions as he completed 63% of his passes.

Jack Johnson

McNairy Central, Jr.

Jack Johnson will try to lead the McNairy Central back to the playoffs as the Bobcats jump  up a class to Class 4A. He threw for 1,065 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions as he completed 49.2% of his passes. He also rushed for 356 yards and four touchdowns.

Tatum Oliver

Dresden, Jr.

Tatum Oliver helped Dresden reach the Class 1A second round and will try to do the same this year as the Lions move to Region 6-1A. He threw for 1,293 yards with 10 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as he completed 52.8% of his passes.

Ty Simpson

Westview, Sr.

Ty Simpson, a five-star Alabama commit, has the potential to lead Westview on one of the program's deepest postseason runs in recent history as the Chargers move down to Class 2A. Simpson is the area's top returner in passing yards with 1,888 to go with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions as he completed 61.1% of his passes. He also rushed for 311 yards and seven touchdowns.

Hayden Sullivan

Milan, Sr.

Hayden Sullivan took over at quarterback midway through last season and started the final six games. He helped the Bulldogs to the Class 3A state championship game before falling to Alcoa. He threw for 763 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions as he completed 53.8% of his passes. He also rushed for 507 yards and five touchdowns.

DeMahri Wallace

North Side, Sr.

DeMahri Wallace is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks returning this season after leading the Indians to the Class 4A playoffs. He threw for 796 yards with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions, while rushing for 618 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Tony Washington

Chester County, Sr.

Tony Washington will try to get the Eagles back into the Class 4A playoffs with his arm and his legs. He accounted for 1572 yards of offense and 12 touchdowns in nine games. He rushed for 578 yards and threw for 994 yards.
