Former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George will replace Rod Reed as the football coach at Tennessee State, according to multiple reports.

The Tennessean confirmed that Reed informed his team Saturday night that Sunday's game at Hale Stadium against Southeast Missouri would be his last. Reed is in his 11th season at TSU.

Attempts to reach Tennessee State athletics director Mikki Allen has been unsuccessful. Stadium's Brett McMurphy first reported the move, which also was reported by ESPN.

George, 47, was a four-time pro bowl running back for the Titans from 1996-2003. He ended his career with Dallas in 2004.

George remained in Nashville after retiring from the NFL. He started an acting career, served as a television football analyst and in 2005 began his own landscape architecture and design company.

Eddie George and his mother, Donna, were all smiles after the running back announces his signing a 6-year, $42 million contract extension with the Tennessee Titans at a press conference at the team headquarters July 18, 2000.

Reed, 54, has led Tennessee State to a 2-4 record heading into Sunday's game. His career record is 58-60.

Reed led Tennessee State to four winnings seasons in 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2017. The Tigers also went 6-6 in 2014.

Reed's best season came in 2013 when Tennessee State went  9-3 overall and 6-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference and finished the regular season ranked No. 17.

The Tigers earned an at-large bid into the FCS playoffs and defeated Butler 31-0 in the first round. Tennessee State lost in the second round to Eastern Illinois 51-10.

After Tennessee State went 6-5 in 2017 the Tigers posted losing records in Reed's final three seasons while also going 7-14 in the OVC.

Reed received a three-year contract extension in 2015 after the Tigers went 7-4. An amendment was made to his contract after the 2018 season, which kept Reed at Tennessee State through this season.

Reed played linebacker at Tennessee State (1984-88). He returned to the school in 2003 as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach on James Webster's staff.
