The Florida Gators made the move they hope will finally end nearly a decade of quarterback ineptitude: bringing Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen back to Gainesville, where he was the offensive coordinator for national championship runs in 2006 and 2008.

Mullen was brought in primarily to rejuvenate a passing game that has wasted several talented rosters over the last few years.

Until Mullen is able to recruit his quarterback of the future, he will build the Gators’ attack around the ones he has.

“If I got a square peg in a round hole, you can sit there and slam all you want; it’s not going to work,” Mullen said at SEC Media Days in July. “What you need to do is go find a square peg, right? … What we’ll do is change (the) offense around the strength of the quarterbacks.”

The Gators return an SEC-high 19 starters on offense and defense, which leaves the players optimistic that a turnaround is in short order.

“You know, (the experience) adds chemistry, and they all have played for a while and all have experience,” senior offensive lineman Martez Ivey said. “A lot of the defense is very much ready for the season, and I’m excited and can’t wait.”
