The Alabama women’s tennis team started its season by picking up two victories against Kennesaw State, 7-0, and Alabama A&M, 7-0, on Sunday inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Indoor Tennis Facility.
In doubles vs. KSU, the No. 51 duo in the nation in freshman Isabella Harvison and junior Moka Ito cruised to a 6-2 win. Seniors Jacqueline Pelletier and Luca Fabian clinched the point, 7-5 over Baker/Reilly to give Alabama the 1-0 lead.
UA dominated singles play vs. KSU. Freshmen Ares Teixido, Sasha Gorchanyuk and Harvison captured their first career dual match singles wins, while Ito and senior Ann Selim also picked up straight-set victories. Senior Alba Cortina Pou concluded the match with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Elle Baker to make the final, 7-0.
The Crimson Tide went 3-for-3 in doubles vs. AAMU. No. 51 Harvison/Ito swept Bozhko/Boyd, 6-0, as did Selim/Teixido against Ghare/Rengil. Cortina Pou/Gorchanyuk came out victorious against Ruiz Diaz/Woods, 6-1.
Alabama continued to dominate in singles play vs. AAMU. Selim and Fabian made a perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweep of their opponents. Teixido, Harvison, and Ito earned the next three wins, bringing the overall score to 6-0. Gorchanyuk claimed her first set with a 6-1 win but found herself in a close 4-4 match-up in the second set. She won the second set, 6-4.
Next, UA will host Indiana and Lipscomb in another double-header Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. CT.
